Music History
Music Historiography I
During my sophomore year, I was enrolled in Music Historiography I with Dr. Eric Hung. In this course, we studied music history beginning at the Medieval Period with chant and organum through the Baroque period to composers such as Bach. This course aided me in my comprehension of early Madrigals and their symbolism and development, early sacred music, and Baroque ornamentation and the influences that transformed the ornamentation that I use in my own Baroque repertoire.
Below are some links to papers on early chant, early music performance, and a project on the Chicago Lyric Opera House.

Music Historiography II
In Music Historiography II with Dr. Sharon Mirchandi, we studied music history from the Classical Period, including composers such as Mozart and Haydn, through the development of 20th century music to the popular music we hear today. I have been able to apply this course extensively to my repertoire studies in the ways of interpretation and comprehension of romantic music, and the ideas of impressionism and expressionism in 20th century repertoire.
Below are links to my group project handout and my own presentation notes for our project on Disability in Composition, and my final paper.

Music Since 1900
Music Since 1900, taught by Dr. Eric Hung, encompassed music composition and development in the 20th and 21st centuries. Also within this course, we studied how to conduct an oral history interview. This course provided me with several skills to use in future. We explored many different categories of composition, such as neoclassicism and process music, which will help me in future with my comprehension of modern music and the evolution of modern composition techniques. Completion of an oral history interview will especially aid me in my future career. The process of interviewing a musician and learning how to blog and share my findings will help with networking with people outside of my community of fellow musicians and teachers.
Below are links to both my project proposal and blog response to my interview with Mrs. Peg Banks.

American Opera
During my senior year, I enrolled in a music history seminar called American Opera. We discussed the progression and history of opera in America. We also examined the development of opera from Europe and how it applied and affected opera as it was brought to America. In addition to discussions, each of us presented two presentations during the semester. Presentations consisted of specific American operatic composers and an oral presentation. Our culminating assignment at the end of the semester focused on a research paper related to a discussion, presentation, or topic that was part of our class.

Introduction to Musicology
Introduction to Musicology, taught by Dr. Sharon Mirchandani, covered the span of current musicologists and their thoughts and writings on some of the most popular music history discussions happening in the world. We read and discussed articles on Brahms' compositions, Mahler's 8th Symphony, and articles by authors such as Ellen Koskoff and Michael Marissen. As a final exhibition of our knowledge gained by studying these authors and musicologists, the final assigned paper was to be an examination of a subject of the musicology field written using the writing and research styles of the authors that we discussed during our class periods.
